Italian designer Luigi Caccia Dominioni turns 100!

Born in 1913, Luigi Caccia Dominioni is an architect and designer who is still designing today at 100 years of age. A graduate of Polytechnic, he has worked with Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and his silverware design for Alessi is in the permanent collection at MoMA.
Here we highlight some of his own architecturally inspired designs. His work is managed by his family in Italy who continue to produce it for private orders. LS10 Grappolo pendant light 1965 The Grappolo pendant light was designed in 1965. It is available with three or four Murano glass globes in transparent or frosted glass.

The Ventola lamp was designed in 1991. A very thin brass cylinder is shaped around the base so the lamp can provide direct or diffused light. The cylinder is also available in a taller version, which projects the light higher into the room. They are lovely placed on steps. There is a smaller version as well that is very chic on bookshelves.

His Catalina Chair, designed in 1958, shows a Japanese influence in its minimalist form. Its grace and simplicity transcends style and looks incredibly contemporary today. There are two versions as shown here. The lower model on the right pairs very well with a canapé enabling all the guests to be seated at the same level. The seat is dark blue but the color can be customized at the request of the customer. The seat cushion can also be made according to the clients wishes as well.

10:45am – Artecase Introduction and History of the Biennale at the Grand Palais

11am – Private Tour of the 27th Biennale des Antiquaires in the Grand Palais

This year’s edition of the Paris Biennale, under the creative direction of the highly acclaimed interior designer and architect Jacques Garcia, boasts an array of prestigious international galleries exhibiting fine and decorative art, antiques, jewellery and collectible design. Led by renowned Art Deco specialist and member of the Syndicat National des Antiquaires Rozen Le Nagard, guests will be introduced to several of the available 20th century and contemporary dealers and discuss the objects on view.

Walk down the Champs Elysées and through the Jardin des Tuileries

Lanvin interior 2 12.30pm – Private tour of the Jeanne Lanvin rooms, Musée des Arts Decoratifs

In honor of the 125th anniversary of Lanvin together with the day’s theme of collectible design, Susan and Elizabeth will present the apartments of Jeanne Lanvin in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs as an example of personal style expressed through contemporary design. We will discuss several factors that contribute to an object obtaining value beyond it’s function and materials.

1.15pm – Lunch and Collectible Design Market Discussion

A light lunch with wine and coffee will be served at the museums’ chic restaurant Le Saut du Loup.  Artecase will discuss the performance of the various sectors of the design market and what makes a piece ‘collectible’.

Walk through the Cour de Louvre and across the Pont des Arts (20mins)

2.45 – Visit to Kreo Gallery in Saint Germain des Pres.

Self described as ‘a design laboratory’ with an emphasis on research and production of their designers’ work, Kreo is the first contemporary design gallery in Paris, collaborating with Bouroullac brothers, Marc Newson, Martin Szekely and Konstantin Grcic among others to present limited edition works. We will visit the current exhibition.

3.15pm- A visit to Galerie Maria Wettergren in Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Gallery owner, Maria Wettergren, world-renowned specialist, and recipient of the prestigious Finn Juhl Architecture Prize for 2014, will discuss the contemporary Scandinavian design scene and the innovative artists she exhibits. Works from her gallery have been acquired as part of the permanent collections in MOMA, New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Walk through Saint-Germain-des-Prés (15 mins)

4.15pm – Private atelier-gallery in Saint–Germain–des–Prés

Known for her eclectic bohemian style, the Parisian antiques dealer and decorator will share with us her current offerings of unique 20th century collectible design. Florence Lopez’s most recent projects include the Paris apartment of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Yvan Attal and private apartments in New York City and Saint Tropez.

5pm Private transport to Lanvin flagship store on rue Faubourg Saint Honoré

5.15pm – Lanvin VIP reception at flagship store on Rue Faubourg Saint Honoré

Lanvin, the oldest couture house in Paris is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. During this visit to the spectacular flagship store, clients will view Jeanne Lanvin’s original private office followed by an exclusive champagne reception in the VIP area and a private viewing of the current Lanvin couture collection.

This lounge chair was designed by French architect/designer Pierre Guariche (1926-1995) in about 1953. It’s recovered in a fabulous cow hide. His work is recognized by top NY galleries and in important collections. Imagine it on an Aspen ranch or in a Tribeca loft!

Finnish designer Alvar Aalto’s (1898-1976) iconic laminated bentwood Paimio Chair is a revolution in organic form and sculptural expression of function. His work influenced Charles and Raye Eames. This is a great piece to for a beginner collector! It’s in the collection of MoMA – need we say more!

Danish architect and designer Philip Arctander‘s (1916-1994) “Clam” Fauteuil ( 1944) in birchwood and upholstered in sheep wool with leather tufted buttons is a design we have seen several times this year. It was shown at PAD Paris in March and sold at Artcurial in May for just under 8,000 Euros. This one has an estimate of 10-15,000 Euros. Will be interesting to see how it sells!

French designer Pierre Paulin (1927 – 2009) is another very important designer whose streamlined and sculptural designs pushed the boundaries in the 1960s and 70s. He was interested in the Modernist movement and the work of the famous Eames. His work is in the permeant collections of MoMA in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. His most famous commission was perhaps the dining tables and chairs for the Palais de L’Elysee in Paris in the early 1970s. His work clearly has a very established place in the evolution of Modern design.

Fontana Arte produced this gorgeous table in around 1965. Just on the heals of the ten year period when famous master glass worker Max Ingrand (whose work we highlight from time to time in Friday Finds! and who was a recipient of the French Legion of Honour.) was the Creative Director.
The more we look at this one the more we consider buying it for ourselves!
Fontana Arte was founded by Gio Ponti (together with Pietro Chiesa) in 1932.

Exciting Italian architect and designer Angelo Mangiarotti (1921-2012) created sculptural design from noble materials such as marble. His work is well documented. This pair of guéridons are from his series called “Eros”.

Paris is glorious under the sunny blue skies of June. It’s a big week for Design with Design/Miami Basel going on (visit us on Twitter (#artecase) for updates) and here in Paris we took the opportunity to visit one of our most admired editors and below are a few of our favorite items from the visit.

This summer our posts will be a bit different each week as we are traveling quite a bit and will share with you what we find! While in Paris we will explore the newly reopened 17th and 18th century rooms in the Louvre. We’d love to hear from you along the way so please leave your comments!

This spectacular ‘London Punk’ chair (2012) by Majd Bazerji is a limited edition of two (numbered 2/2 and signed). It is in gunmetal steel and yellow saddle leather. H50cm x W31cm . Both open and closed the form of the chair is very powerful in its simplicity. Magnificent!

The fluid and poetic forms of this ‘Infini’ sculptural light (2013) by Nathaneal Le Berre in bronze and brass are astonishing. The light source comes from deep within the mysterious folds of the material and creates a wonderful glow. We found it a very moving piece.

The TACCIA was designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1958 and edited by FLOS in 1962. Achille Castiglione was one of the favorite tutors at Milan Polytechnic in the 1980s when Paola Antonelli, design curator of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, was an architecture student This lamp provides light by reflecting off its spun aluminum white to project it forwards in a gentle arc. It is placed on a sublime
Commode Colette ca. 1922 by Jacques Emile Ruhlmann with its exquisite lines and perfect symmetry. The mirror above by Philippe Borderieux (2014) stopped us in our tracks. It is a dynamic and unique piece in enamel, flowing with energy and brilliance.

This week we found some exciting pieces around Paris!

This beautiful and sculptural ‘Orque’ chair by Jean-Philippe Gleizes (born 1952) caught our eye with its powerful lines and minimalistic form. It was made in 1987 of welded steel. H80cm x H41cm x W50cm.

A chair by Elisabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti called “The Night and the Day”, Circa 1990. The structure is in beaten iron with a white patina and gold and silver leaf and it is upholstered in a beautiful yellow fabric. Edition Galerie Néotu. H80cm x L76cm x W70cm.

A pair of ‘Olympia’ wall appliqués in metal with a green and brown patina, by Mark Brazier-Jones. One of the pair has red glass balls and on the other they are translucent. A beautiful example of a ‘mismatched’ pair! H70cm x W27cm

photo copy 12 A stunning lustre by Herve van der Straeten (b. 1965) in gilded bronze with a large rock crystal pendant. This piece makes a really powerful and poetic statement. H143cm x L84cm.

For car-racing enthusiasts, we spotted this low table in the Firestone colors of the Porsche 917 used by Steve McQueen in the film ‘Le Mans’. by Didier Jeudy (b. 1950). Signed by the artist on the side along with McQueen’s apocryhphal signature. Painted in orange and blue and protected by a polylustre varnish. H45cm x L120cm x W80cm.

Wednesday night was the annual Nocturne Rive Droite in Paris, an evening of vernissages at the galleries located in the Carré d’or (between l’avenue Matignon, le Faubourg Saint Honoré, la rue de Miromesnil and la rue de Penthièvre).
Later in the week we spotted a couple of jewels for either side of your bed and a truly gorgeous pair of Scandinavian chairs.
And lastly we would like to share with you an exhibition in LA by one of our friends.

This desk lamp by Emile Guillot is so chic! It’s nickel-plated chrome, which gives it more of the look of silver vs. chrome. It was designed in the 1920s/30s. The two glass shelves pivot.

This sublime pair of Monsieur et Madame chairs in the following three photos was designed by Scandinavian duo Madsen and Schubel for the American market in the 1950s.
This was when Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner were becoming quite well known in the States and it was clear that there was a market for Scandinavian design.
Only a small production sold for one shop in NY.
Dimensions: Width: 67 cm, Depth 68 cm, Height of Madame chair 82 cm, Height of Monsieur chair 98 cm.
The back of the Madame chair is lower to accommodate for those elaborate 1950s hairdos!
Price for the pair: 5,720 Euros

Nighttime at Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center at J.F.K., 1964 by by Balthazar Korab, the prominent architectural photographer who died last year. His work is featured in the inaugural exhibition at the new Christopher Mount Gallery in LA (and NY by appointment). (6,000 $US)

Pharrell Williams has curated the exhibition GIRL which opened this week at Emmanuel Perrotin’s new gallery space, Salle du Bal, a former ballroom at the Hotel du Grand Veneur. The show celebrates women and is both challenging and uplifting. Try and make time to get over there. Its well worth seeing!

The stunning ‘Emerald Double Necklace’ by Jean-Michel Othoniel dominated the main gallery space at Perrotin. The effect when standing in the room is breathtaking. In the background you can just spy the happy portrait of Pharrell and Helen Williams by Takashi Murakami.

We loved this fun ‘Studio Loveseat’ (Pharrell) by Rob Pruitt, 2014, created with markers and pens on a canvas couch with chromed feet. Note the portrait of Pharrell in the centre! The two paintings of Marilyn Monroe (acrylic on Ikea ink jet canvas) are by Pruitt in collaboration with Pharrell Williams

This powerful ‘sculptural’ light is by an American designer whose work is now available in France.

Several wonderful exhibitions opened during Design Days and continue for the next few weeks. This piece caught our eye. We were struck with the powerful dynamic created by its angular and challenging lines couched in peaceful blue.

Inspired by ancient rock formations and strata, this exciting young designer used jesmonite for this beautiful low table combined with several different colour pigments to create swirling effects and flowing patterns. The series explores the theme of what we conceive to be ‘fake’ or ‘real’.

This vase (above and below) is part of the same series as the low table.

Friday Finds from DDays Paris!

We saw a lot of inspiring and provocative new design this past week in Paris!

One standout event is the exhibition of McCollin Bryan by Rozen Le Nagard. These octagonal cast resin tables from the show are inspired by jewels and are beautiful in a cluster or as a simple elegant statement on their own.

This occasional table in midnight blue resin is stunning!

Another intriguing piece from this show is this sculptural two-piece scagliola console. We examined it and finally asked Rozen to explain what we were looking at as it appeared to be marble – but not quite… maybe crocodile … not exactly.

We found the piece to be extremely contemporary yet evocative of other times and methods.

This bench is by an American designer whose work is now available in France! The mixture of printing techniques with leather creates the right balance between contemporary and timeless.

This exciting lamp is going to grace many evening cocktail cruises and garden parities this summer! Closed it looks like a book with a wooden jacket. To open it is to turn it on. It is magnetized so as to be easily attached to metal surfaces. It also comes with a pendant so it can by hung.

A ‘tank’ chair designed by Pharrell Williams was presented this week as part of the American Design exhibition. This guy is everywhere!
He has also curated an exhibition that opens next week at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin!

Mathias Kiss – Reflexion Mirror 2013

The ‘Reflexion mirror’ (2013) by the Franco-Hungarian designer Mathias Kiss, navigates the boundaries of art and design, creating a multifacted surface with rigid materials. Plate glass mirrors, first produced in Murano Italy in the 16th century, became luxury objects found in palaces across Europe. This contemporary interpretation evokes the excitement and luxury of period mirrors. This mirror would look spectacular in a ski chalet (image above), echoing the surface of a glittering ice and snow-covered mountain range. Equally, it would add an edgy element to a pristine and minimalist yacht interior…..

1970s furniture expressed playfulness, optimism and excitement about the future (space age). This green bar and red cabinet by Pierre Cardin in the 1970s express all of this plus a world of freedom of bold expression.
