A print of the portrait of Coco Chanel by Georgette Tavé

Translation: “A portrait is a character. This one of Coco Chanel, appeared without makeup. ‘Without hope/desire … It arrived like this. She was a bit dark, always with roses around her hat, her face pointed, like her character.’ When the artist lent this painting to an exhibition in Tokyo, the Japonese lined up for hours to see this little this sweet little face hardened by success.”

This print will be offered at auction this weekend.
200-300 Euros

The Duna lounge chair was one of the pieces we saw last week at  an evening talk on how the Design market is infiltrating the Art market. It is composed of 60 separate pieces freijo, a Brazilian wood, which together create a chair form evocative of sand dunes.

Friday Finds! StudioDrift’s Ghost Chairs

Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of Studio Drift are phenomenally talented! Looking back at their amazing Ghost Chair Collection (2007/2008) of futuristic plexiglass chairs created with laser technology, we were struck again by the originality of their vision.

tumblr_naaioiDLKk1rpfe9vo1_r1_500 Created using acrylic and air, Gordijn and Nauta have said the idea for the collection “is based on a classical philosophical question: do objects, just like people, possess an inner complexity that is hidden underneath a plain surface?”

ghost-chair-2 Under a certain light the viewer sees hundreds of microscopic bubbles which were created using a unique 3D-technique to form drawings beneath the surface within the translucent acrylic of the chair frame.

The effect is astonishingly powerful.

Their light sculpture (which we first saw at Design Miami), Fragile Future III is made up of three-dimensional bronze electrical circuits connected to LED lights onto which real dandelions seeds are attached. The effect is dazzling with the ethereal shape of the dandelion seeds creating diffused points of lights on the grid-like structure.

Friday Finds – Contemporary Chinese Design

The dialogue between the past and the present continues to resonate deeply within us and we are excited to share with you the new Shanghai- based luxury lifestyle brand, Shang-Xia (Mandarin for “up down”).

They have collaborated with Christie’s auction house around the globe this summer (first stop was Paris,  followed by New York and San Francisco) to
present their debut collection of very limited edition furniture, jewelry and and tea sets.  The works wholly embrace the traditional heritage of Chinese craftsmanship while expressing a very clean modern aesthetic.

This series of Da Tian Di  (Big Sky and Earth) Chairs is an artful embodiment of the concept of Heaven and Earth – straight angles framing a curve.

This exquisite porcelain tea cup, ‘Lotus Pure’ (2014), is a unique piece. Made of paper-thin egg porcelain, it is breathtakingly delicate and elegant. The balance of simplicity of form and bold colors is perfect.

~~

photo 5-3Our guide, Thomas, at the exhibition was exceedingly enthusiastic and knowledgable. He really excited us about the elegance and grace of the designs and ceremony of these objects.

photo 3-3

This tea set was presented on the landing of the main staircase at Christie’s with the view behind it into a research room. The size and weight and feel of these objects creates a sublime experience – and we didn’t even have any tea!

Note: We found out later that this brand was launched by Hermès in 2008. Also interesting to know, is that this is the first time Christie’s has collaborated with a retail brand. Sales details are here.

Sara Ouhaddou – one to watch!

Sara Ouhaddou is definitely someone to keep an eye on!   This young French Moroccan designer reinterprets the unique traditional techniques of Moroccan craftsmen and applies it to her contemporary designs. Her inspired debut collection of  tabourets, embroidered cushions and mosaic tiles is breathtaking!

IMG_2095

Her hand-crafted ceramic tile collection is influenced by the delicate  mosaic tradition of Fez with its Spanish/Arabic roots. Each tile, of which there are five different patterns, is hand sculpted and unique as a result of the firing technique which creates a subtle difference between each one. We love her attention and commitment to handcrafted detail as well as the dynamic tension evoked through her bold use of space and depth.

The above image shows the complete series of six tabourets in the collection. The first and last in the series have embroidered cushions on clay bases. The second and fourth are metallic and red lacquered ceramic. The third and fifth tabourets incorporated beautifully embroidered recycled rubber.

Sara’s original use of recycled rubber tires, a material and ‘fabric’ in the creation of her beautiful tabourets and embroidered cushions reflects her deep commitment to ecological issues.

This photo is just so beautiful we wanted to share it with you to emphasize the culture, stories and historical threads Sara has ‘woven’ together to create such a strongly rooted yet completely contemporary design collection.
