R 20th Century takes over for Moss

“R 20th Century, the 15-year-old gallery that specializes in post-1945 international design, has stepped up to fill the void left by the recent closure of Moss. Founders Meyers and Snyderman have contributed to some of the field’s major recent museum exhibitions — MoMA’s “Century of the Child” among them — and the duo is also charging headlong into emerging markets, participating in Design Days Dubai and cornering the market on 20th-century Brazilian design.”

The objects in the two current exhibitions : David Wiseman and Objects Show do have that exciting feeling one experienced when entering Moss.

Ingrid Donat

Having just seen their impressive stand at Design Miami last week, we were at the vernissage this evening of ‘Project Room’ at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris which showcased the amazing work of Ingrid Donat. Each of her bronze furniture pieces is produced in a series of eight with four artists proofs and then the mold is destroyed. We loved this commode in solid bronze with the carved African female heads at each corner and were dazzled by the brilliant interior of the drawers. The inspired ‘handles’ challenge the viewers perception of the heaviness of the bronze as they seem to just flip up out of the surface. We spoke to the designer who explained the lengthy process involved in her creations and her attention to detail, pointing out that even the back of her pieces are exquisitely finished. She also touched on the two main influences on her work as a designer – primitive art and the work of Gustav Klimt. ‘Discovering. Touching. Noting the smallest details. From the inside of a drawer to the back of a piece of furniture, everything has to be beautiful. I am obsessed with detail’.

Cesar and Diego Giacommeti recognized her unique talent in the early days when she was just starting her work as a sculptor and designer, and they encouraged her to create her own furniture!

Villa Allegra by Oppenheim Architecture + Design

We had a wonderful tour this morning (organised by the Courtauld Alumni Association) of the Villa Allegra, the Oppenheim’s stunning house in Miami. Designed by the owners (Oppenheim Architecture + Design) eight years ago, the house itself is a monument to clear, thoughtful architectural design. The large pillar seen here contains an innovative outdoor shower running the whole length of the pillar. It has no ceiling so the sky above is visible to the occupant, a wonderful concept on a clear Miami night!

You can see the amazing pieces of collectible design spread around the magnificent living room – a wonderful ‘Teddy Bear Chair’ by the Campana brothers (number 20 in a limited edition first shown by Murray Moss in 2004), a Marcel Wanders ‘Crochet’ Chair and a glorious ‘Blossom’ chandelier made of Swarovski crystals by Tord Boontje.

Maarten De Ceulaer’s ‘Tansformations’ at Design Miami 2012

Elizabeth Chase Rochette looking at Maarten De Ceulaer’s Fendi sponsored project, entitled ‘Tansformations’, last night at the Design Miami vernissage! It was exhilarating to be under this tent filled with the best contemporary design and masterpieces of the 20th century. We were drawn to this installation that supports the concept of sharing the process of a designers work with the audience. It is an exploration of the boundaries between hard and soft, natural and man-made, organic and geometric and the luxurious and mundane. De Ceulaer will be adding to the work throughout the week.

Produced by Wava Carpenter, who is a curatorial consultant for Design Miami and has overseen this project since its inception in 2009, the Design Performance program, is a platform to showcase young designers and to underscore the importance of the creative process that goes into studio-based design work.

Michel Mangematin

Michel Mangematin (1928 – 2012), the French architect who studied in the workshops of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe created a small, but exquisite number of design pieces. He in fact only designed three pieces of furniture, all of which you can see in our photographs, and all with the same legs and minimal framework. His dedication to architecture and his teaching in Clermont Ferrand took up the majority of his time.

This pair of bronze and altuglass armchairs were in a gallery in Paris and we were struck by their simplicity and clarity of design.
