Ingrid Donat

Having just seen their impressive stand at Design Miami last week, we were at the vernissage this evening of ‘Project Room’ at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris which showcased the amazing work of Ingrid Donat. Each of her bronze furniture pieces is produced in a series of eight with four artists proofs and then the mold is destroyed. We loved this commode in solid bronze with the carved African female heads at each corner and were dazzled by the brilliant interior of the drawers. The inspired ‘handles’ challenge the viewers perception of the heaviness of the bronze as they seem to just flip up out of the surface. We spoke to the designer who explained the lengthy process involved in her creations and her attention to detail, pointing out that even the back of her pieces are exquisitely finished. She also touched on the two main influences on her work as a designer – primitive art and the work of Gustav Klimt. ‘Discovering. Touching. Noting the smallest details. From the inside of a drawer to the back of a piece of furniture, everything has to be beautiful. I am obsessed with detail’.

Cesar and Diego Giacommeti recognized her unique talent in the early days when she was just starting her work as a sculptor and designer, and they encouraged her to create her own furniture!
