Working with Bill opened my eyes to the real potential of design to have positive impact on people’s lives while disabusing me of the idea that a narrow focus on aesthetics was a worthwhile pursuit for a designer. He was never content with something that was merely a more attractive version of what had come before. He wanted to meet the real and deep needs of people by figuring out how to craft technology so that it fit seamlessly into their lives.

All the Best! Czech Art Glass at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague

A blown glass chandelier called Bubbles in Space, 2009. Designed by Jitka Kamencovà-Skuhravà and currently on display in All the Best! Czech Art Glass at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague.

This playful chandelier communicates well with the delicate floral patterns on the ceiling and enlivens the atmosphere. The juxtaposition of old and new creates a spark of excitement. There is a dialogue created between different mediums, times and techniques. Something new is said! Seeing the chandelier in situ is what makes us dream of owning it for ourselves. To our minds and senses this light is the most successful part of the exhibition.

House Proud: Nineteenth-century Watercolor Interiors

Cooper-Hewitt, Nation Design Museum Presents its 2008 exhibition “House Proud: Nineteenth-century Watercolor Interiors”, in Paris this fall at the Museé de la Vie Romantique. Featuring 89 watercolors the exhibition explores the evolution of interior design in the 19th-century home and considers how interior spaces reflected the impact of contemporary social, cultural, economic and political developments.
