Elise Gabriel and the ‘Liga’ chair

Under the tutelage of Erwan Bouroullec and Benjamin Graindorge, the young French designer Elise Gabriel has explored the challenging properties of Zelfo, a cellulose fibre based material, in the design of this ‘Liga’ chair. Zelfo is manipulated while still damp and then reduces by 70% while drying and hardening. Gabriele has here used it as a structural element to bond the wood and create the rigid structure while reinforcing the solidity of the chair. The wood is held together by Zelfo alone without glue or nails, an extraordinary achievement when you consider that it is as resistant as a classically assembled chair.

There is a dynamic tension which exists between the wood and the Zelfo creating an organic and harmonious whole. For us the beauty of this piece lies in the juxtaposition and coexistence of the two materials allied to the sinuous lines of the frame – a mingling of fragility and strength.
