Eric Schmitt Tables and Lamp

Exploring serpentine forms using metal, marble and glass is the metier of the talented French designer Eric Schmitt, whose works we admire for the subtle and sculptural elegance they bring to an interior.  The lamp on the lower left was shown at Art Paris Art Fair last week at the Cat-Berro Galerie stand. It seems to be made in two pieces of alabaster. (The top can be lifted off so you can change the light bulb!) We will be visiting him  soon at his atelier near Fontainebleu to learn about his new works for the June issue of Cultured Magazine. Do you have any questions about his work? We’d love to hear form you.

Ingo Maurer at PAD Paris.

Downtown Gallery had a stunning stand at PAD Paris this year. We loved these amazing Uchiwa lights in bamboo and rice paper for M Design by Ingo Maurer. The lights are very fragile so it is hard to find them in good condition. An aspect of design that we always find inspiring is the use of original and imaginative materials and the creative thought and technical prowess they require. Just look at how the light diffuses out from behind and around the fan shape with their distinctly Eastern feel.

André Dubreuil wall appliqués at Cornette de Saint Cyr sale

Paris is a hotbed of activity this week!  The Cornette de Saint Cyr design sale coincided with the vernissage for the Art Paris Art Fair yesterday evening but we happily managed to get to both. This highly covetable pair of lacrima wall appliqués (c 1990) by André Dubreuil sold for €6,900 just nudging the bottom end of the estimate of €7,000-9,000. We viewed them pre-sale and they are stunning pieces. In blue crystal (the coupe), gold leaf and bronze they are both signed ‘Daum France’ and numbered (17/100 and 23/100). Just imagine how they would look on your wall!

Erwan Boulloud Lighting and Case furniture at Art Paris Art Fair

ArtParis is electric! Young designers are breaking new ground with works that are thoughtful, playful and experimental in turns. We are very excited about the energy and quality presented last evening at the vernissage! Stay tuned from more on this fair in our upcoming article for AAD!

The two works presented above by Erwan Boulloud  are presented by Parisian Galerie Acabas. The intertwining floor lamps play with movement and shadow while absorbing and emitting light simultaneously. The designers furniture ideas each began as sculptural explorations making their there functionality secondary. In the designers words, ‘Each creation represents the snapshot of a history in ongoing evolution bearing the imprint of a perceptible movement. Works succeed each other, creating lines, junctions, crossings, disappearances and mutations.’

Noé Duchaufour Lawrance’s ‘Borghese’ Sofa

This ‘Borghese’ sofa by one of the brightest of France’s new generation of designers, Noé Duchaufour Lawrance was presented at the Salon du Mobilier in Milan last year. Inspired by the umbrella pines in the Villa Borghese gardens in Rome, (the organic metal structure reproduces the patterning of tree branches while the cushioning is the foliage), it reflects perfectly Duchaufour Lawrance’s aim to “create an emotional connection with nature”. This idea really touches a chord with me and I love the organic shapes and forms in his work like his ‘Naturoscopie’ collection we saw in Design Miami in December.  In the words of the man himself, “I think its vital we make an organic connection between the interior and the exterior through the objects we design”. The importance of knowing the inspiration, content and information behind this ‘Borghese’ piece transforms it from being just a sofa to being an experience. It is exactly this concept and process of transformation which excites and inspires us at Artecase and gives relevance and meaning to design. There is so much to explore!

You will be seeing more of us this week than usual as there’s alot going on in Paris with PAD Paris and ArtFair Paris, so stay tuned!

Humans since 1982 A Million Times Clock at Design Days Dubai

A million times (Time Dubai) by Humans since 1982, a design collective based in Stockholm, is a mesmerizing experience with time. I would love to have this clock in my house along with the music! Watch this video! It comes in many sizes and each minute it shows the time clearly. Love!

Gaetano Pesce wall lights at Artcurial Design Sale

This pair of ‘corner’ wall lights (1990) by Gaetano Pesce,  lot 444 in the Artcurial Design Sale tomorrow really caught my eye. In wood and metal with a resin diffuser, their trompe l’oeil effect is playful and original  while the blue/green light they produce diffuses the room with a soft and hazy atmosphere. I saw a similar corner light, also by Pesce in a private house in Palma this summer and was bowled over by the play of light it produced.

Estimate €800-1,200

Toots Zynsky’s Glass Bowl

This glass bowl appears to be moving, writhing gently in a warm breeze. How can a stationary object evoke such an ‘experience’?  We learned in carnet de notes by Paolo Rinaldi, that Toots Zynsky’s work is in an exhibition at Caterina Tognon Arte Contemporanea, in Venice.  There is a magnificent striped version in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs here in Paris which we blogged in November here.
