Design Sale -‘Young Collectors’, Cornette de Saint Cyr, Paris
We were intrigued by the title of this sale in Paris earlier this week, and found several exciting items for clients. These iconic chairs in steel wire, designed in 1965 by Warren Platner have a lyrical quality, reflecting his design values:- “I felt there was room for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV”.

The lines of this ‘Swan’ sofa by Arne Jacobsen are supremely elegant. In production from 1964-1974, this model was revived in 2000.

The flowing line of the base of this unique table by Bruno Moinard creates a stunning effect. We love the tone of green of the glass tabletop.

Here is another statement piece. The Bar! We have had several requests for bars lately -often the requests are for Modern bars but this one in tonight’s Artcurial sale caught our eye. It creates a counter balance in a Paris client’s Haussmanian apartment, which is filled with Modern design. This ‘bar’ is actually a counter from the Magasin Lefèvre-Utile in Nantes. The initials ‘LU’ are visible in the center of each cartouche. LU is a famous brand of biscuits here in France.

Sublime and deeply sensual is this very rare private design commission by Isamu Noguchi for Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Dretzin in 1948. His sculptural mastery is revealed in all its glory in this work of interlocking fossil marble parts.
According to the video Christie’s NY has produced and which you are invited to watch in the following post, It is the most important piece of Noguchi furniture to ever come to public sale.

Thierry Dreyfus’s Table basse “Hommage”, 2011, édition de huit
According to Suzy Menkes from the International Herald Tribune, “Thierry Dreyfus is the man who is making the City of Light live up to its name. The designer is the master of the soft glow, bright beams and laser lines. Dreyfus may be an artist with light, but he is too modest to give himself that title or to compare himself with conceptual neon experimenters of the 1980s and with the light installations of the American artist James Turrell”.
We recently saw this table at a gallery on the Rive Gauche during Designer’s Days. It truly glows from within. The effect is absolutely enchanting.
Dreyfus’s description of ‘Hommage’:
Man.
I wanted to reveal a man’s most intimate cleavage, the fracture around which he builds his life… and looking inside this facture, one catches a glimpse of the roof of the world.
Stretched in between his aspirations and existence, his inner violence and search for quietness, he finds a balance.
Like a scar, the interstice never heals.
The wound becomes precious, absorbs light, warms it up to concentrate and irradiate it.
From this fracture, a convivial table rises.

Delta – 1969 – acrylique sur toile

Im. consécutive 2000 acrylique sur toile
We also saw some paintings by Joel Stein in a gallery on the Rive Gauche. They were rather mesmerizing. Our eyes kept being drawn toward them while we were discussing other objects. Rumor has it that Hermès has been inspired to create a scarf based on one of his paintings…. we look forward to that 🙂
